I reckon it was based on the concept of 9 Rasas of natyashastra. |

Even superior to Ravana were 1000-hands of Kartavirya Arjuna. Kartavirya had kept Ravana as a captive, but left Ravana on the request of Pulastya (Grandfather of Ravana, a great sage). |
